Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Am On The Fence About

Happy Tuesday friends! My life has been crazy! Between applying to summer internships to trying to finding housing for next year I have been quite busy! I am happy that I have a bit of a break for the next 24 hours which I am going to devote to reading. These are a collection of books that I have heard a lot about but I am not sure if I want to read them for various reasons. Also, if you have read any of these please let me know what you thought of them!

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

I have been hearing a lot about this on twitter and it is giving me creepy mermaid vibes but I have read the synopsis a few times and I am not seeing the mermaid part.

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

This book was on my TBR for over winter break because it sounds like a fabulous and very timely novel but the main thing that is holding me back is that I have not been enamored with Mafi’s work in the past. I read Nevermore and wasn’t really into it and I tried reading Shatter Me and couldn’t start it. Maybe third times the charm?

wheel of time

The Entire Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan

I am a huge fantasy lover but these books are so long and I have tried reading obnoxiously long fantasy books and it just doesn’t work but they sound so good! Also there is the show (or is it a movie?) coming out and I want to see that and I am one of the subscribers to the philosophy of reading before watching.

A Memory Called Empire

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine

I love the concept of this book but I am not exactly one for murder mysteries.

Queen of Air and

Queen of Air and Darkness and all of the other Shadowhunter novels that I haven’t read yet by Cassie Clare

I was not a fan of LoS but I also want to finish this series because I have spent so much time with this series. However, I don’t want to spend my time reading something that I am not going enjoy.

jest

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

This is on my TBR but it is mostly there to remind me that it exists. This, frankly, a really weird book on top of being rather long so I am not sure if it is worth it.

Legendary

Legendary by Stephaine Garber

Like QoA&D, I have this on my TBR already because I read Caraval. I didn’t fall in love with Caraval and I am not interested in reading something that I will not enjoy hence the do I or don’t I.

Enchantee .jpg

Enchantée by Gita Trelease

This book sounds perfect for me but I have seen a few negative reviews from people who are share similar reading tastes with. I am trying to decide if I should take the leap of faith and just read it or pass.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Hugo

I feel like this book was on all of the best lists last year but I am not sure about the subject. This type of historical fiction is a bit iffy because I am not a big fan of memiors and biographies. I know that is more fictional but still realistic. Maybe I just need to get it from the library and dive in.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme by The Broke and The Bookish and is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

  1. I like Tahereh Mafi, but can totally get that some people wouldn’t get on with her writing. I’m hoping to read the book you’ve featured soon.

  2. I am unsure about the hype behind “Evelyn Hugo”… and I got “House of Salt and Sorrows” from NetGalley, and I’m super pumped to read it! I can see how it gives you mermaid vibes, but pretty sure it’s a “Twelve Dancing Princesses” retelling.

  3. Great list! I didn’t read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo last year but I saw so many amazing reviews last year that I picked up a copy recently and I’m looking forward to it because I believe there’s an f/f romance in there somewhere. I tried reading A Game of Thrones and couldn’t get into Martin’s writing style – I think I’ll just stick with the show!

  4. I am a huge Fantasy fan and don’t mind a long book. I tried reading George R. R. Martin and just couldn’t get into it. I bet the story is epic but his writing is just so meh. He’s just not a good writer in my opinion. He has several short stories so I might give one of those a try again. Seven Husbands is on my TBR and I’m really looking forward to reading it.

  5. I really loved Enchantee but then it’s very much to my reading tastes, so I’m not really sure if I can offer you anything there! I really loved Legendary, and I’ve heard people who didn’t love Caraval found Legendary better, so take that how you want. I love the Game of Thrones show, but haven’t read the books yet, I think reading them on audio might be less intimidating, so I’m going to try that.

  6. My husband read the first few Wheel of Time books right after they came out and he enjoyed them (he’s not much of a reader, so that tells you something). I did read A Game of Thrones and while I liked it, I feel no motivation to read the rest of the series. I hope you do enjoy them if you do read them though!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  7. Evelyn Hugo was one of my top reads last year!! It’s not typically something I would pick up either but a lot of my trusted bloggers, were recommending it over and over. I loved it so much. I would honestly pass on Game of Thrones because I don’t know that he will ever finish the series. If he does, then totally pick it up!

  8. J’adore Enchantée! I liked it better than Wildcard, which is saying something for me.

I haven’t read A Very Large Expanse of Sea, but I went and bought the special Target edition with the extra chapters. I guess that means I’ll read it… someday. I liked QOAAD (although it is long, they could have probably made it two books) and GoT.
