Book Review: Geekerella by Ashley Poston

"Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite."

Rating:★★★★✯ (4.5 stars)

Date Read: August 11, 2017 to August 12, 2017

First Thoughts: I loved this book! It was such a light and fun read. It was also prefect for those missing out on SDCC blues.

Synopsis:

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

This is going to be a short review because Geekerella is a retelling of Cinderella with a super geeky twist.  And be still my fangirl heart, it was amazing! However, as it was so amazing it is still a retelling that closely follows the original story. So if you have ever seen the Disney version, this is ten thousand times better but it is the idea. Lost glass slipper and everything. I truly do love this book.

Elle is a great character and I really felt for what she was going through. Darien is an adorable closet nerd. I don’t get why Poston didn’t make him flaunt his nerdy-ness everywhere but I guess that it allowed for some character development and what else would Elle be able to complain about. Also, I noticed that some people have mentioned on how his abs are insured. Yes, it is insane and that is the point. Mark, Darien’s asshole father, did that and Poston wrote it to show how Mark was only there for his son’s money & fame and did not care about him at all. Sage also had some great character development and really liked her in the end. And the little hot dog, Franco, is just too cute!

One feature of the book that I really enjoyed was how well developed Starfield was. It felt like a retelling of Star Trek mixed with the sadness of the cancellation of Firefly. Poston’s detail and Elle’s passion for it, makes me really want to go and binge watch while making my next cosplay outfit.

As I stated before, this is a retelling of Cinderella with a love letter to nerds twist. It is perfect for fans who want a nice little love letter. The reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars was due to the fact that even though I loved it, it was not on the same level in storytelling as Schwab or Maas or Lu. Either way, it is a read all fangirls will enjoy?

What are your thoughts on Geekerella? Was it a star-studded success or a flop that should have never happened? Tell me your thoughts in the comments! I would love to hear from you!
